May 18, 2010 marks the thirty year anniversary of the worst natural disaster to strike the Pacific Northwest. These are some images of the devastation and destruction that changed this unique landscape.
The avalanche that slammed into Spirit Lake thirty years ago caused a tidal wave. The debris of rock, soil, ice and trees raised the water surface by two hundred feet. Mt. Rainier stands tall in the background.
