It's fascinating to stand on the rim and see how the eruption destroyed the north flank. The full magnitude of the devastion comes to view, steep cliffs, the one mile wide crater, and lots of logs floating in Spirit Lake. The lateral blast generated 24 megatons of thermal energy and it was the largest debris avalanche in recorded history.
