The Painted Hills are referred to as the "Alien or Martian" world of Oregon. The different colors and layers were formed throughout the years by changes in climate from wet to dry seasons.
Red soils originate from a tropical period, yellow from a drier and cooler time, and the black streaks are manganese stains.
