~ Last Wilderness ~
Opal Creek is known for pristine water and 500–1000-year-old trees that soar 250' ft high. In 1980 Dave “Chainsaw” Alexander vowed to clear cut this wilderness, however numerous lawsuits were filed in federal court making it one of the largest environmental battles in Oregon history. A book was written about this controversy in 1993 titled: “Showdown at Opal Creek”. The 20,266 acres of land is now protected by the USFS.
